Spring Cleaning Roof Checklist

As the weather continues to warm up and you start making your spring cleaning lists, don’t forget about your roof! It is important to remember that your roof needs as much care as your garage and yard does to keep it in tip-top shape. We have put together a checklist to help you tackle the spring cleaning of your roof.

1. Clean and Check Gutters

At the top of your spring cleaning checklist is to clean and check your gutters. Gutters can get very heavy if they are clogged and can eventually start to pull away from the roof or siding. It is important to remove debris from your gutters to further protect your roof. Clearing clogged gutters will also help prevent leaks, overflowing water and foundation damage. Scoop out all the debris and then use a garden hose to flush anything remaining. Check to make sure your downspouts are positioned to encourage water runoff away from the house.

2. Inspect the Roof

Now that the gutters are clean, we need to inspect the roof. Getting on your roof can be dangerous, so grab some binoculars and check your roof safely from the ground. First thing we need to look for is missing shingles. If you notice any missing shingles, contact WeatherShield immediately.  Missing shingles can bring about other issues if not fixed in a timely manner. Other things to look for are curling shingles, stained shingles, wear around pipes, loose material or fungus and algae.

3. Check the Inside

Last but not least, head inside and check your top-floor ceilings and walls for signs of leaking. You should also get in the attic and look for water droplets as this could be a sign of a leak from underneath the roof. Large water spots on your ceiling may be a sign of serious damage and should not be covered up with paint. Also check for sagging ceilings as those need to be addressed by a professional.
